Architecture and Renovation, South Brisbane and South Bank

Arena Apartments part of the next step in South Brisbane's transformation

Ask a long term local and they’ll tell you the coming of Expo 88 transformed this neighbourhood. Until the mid 1980’s South Brisbane still looked pretty much like an old and fading merchant and commercial hub. Expo’s sheer scale and enormous public investment was always going to mean dramatic change for this peninsula, but even through the 1990’s and early 2000’s the north tip of the suburb was home to plenty of under-utilised commercial property. Sheds and warehouse on large plots of land, property developers seemingly oblivious to the core appeal of the area – right opposite the CBD and snugly tucked between two of inner-Brisbane’s most sought-after entertainment and recreational precincts in South Bank and the emerging West End.

And then things changed.

Today the suburb’s a highly desirable residential address and as local real estate agents we’re not in the least bit surprised by the flurry of interest in our neighbourhood. Only that it’s taken so long!

The Arena Apartments in Edmondstone Street are nearing completion and, with 191 apartments, will be South Brisbane’s largest residential development. The architecture is refreshing with its long, angular columns. It’s a part of an exciting and continuing transformation from the 1980’s grungy, empty-after-6pm streetscape, into 2014’s thriving, exciting and fresh inner-city precinct.
