Another happy, bubbling crowd at the annual West End State School Fiesta yesterday. It’s a real treat for the senses – the smells of dozens of different international foods, the live bands, the excited chatter of the kids, the WWWWOOOOOSH of the rides flinging their passengers through the air. Congrats go to all the parents, staff and students who put in so much effort. Organising Fiesta takes a mountain of volunteer hours and gives the broader community a chance to support the school.
This year Bees Nees very own company chairman Boris called in to say hi and hand out some balloons. Can’t keep that bee away from a good party!

It wouldn’t raise a mention in many parts of the world, Asia and Europe especially. But new stats from the West End State School show 32% of their students are currently living in local apartments. They have 700 students so that’s a lot of non-house-dwelling primary school kids.
Many Brisbanites still see apartment living as the lifestyle of choice for singles and couples only, but that’s clearly not the case. Families are choosing them for their convenience and often for their price.
Even more reason to ensure we have great parks and local amenities.

It’s one of those rare times you see the soul of a community – the local school fete! Last Sunday was Queensland Day and West End State School marked the date with their annual “Fiesta”.
The crowds were great, soaking up the live music, international foods and plenty of games and rides for kids.
My kids voted the strawberry and marshmellow sticks (dipped in chocolate) the best they’d ever had!
You’ve got to take your hats off to the parents who volunteer to organise these sort of days. An enormous task!

First day at school for some very big boys and girls and first day back for others! Opened in 1875, West End State School bounded by Vulture, Hardgrave, Horan and Jane Streets currently has over half of their students and staff from non-English speaking backgrounds providing a special opportunity for children to learn in a multicultural environment. According to their webpage it was three schools in one originally, keeping the boys separated from the girls and another school for infants.
