One of West End’s more publicised development sites is back in the news today. On the corner of Montague Road and Beesley Street it’s been in and out of the news over the past couple of years with public and legal debate over the various proposals for new apartments. Too high, too many, too much carparking. Then the whole thing fell in a heap.

The developers were placed into receivership some months back but the Courier Mail today reports the site may be under contract to active locals the Pradella group. The developers behind Flow, Water’s Edge and Tempo, Pradella know the Montague Road precinct better than most. If they can’t make this site work then no-one can.

I don’t catch the bus. I could use it for trips around the inner city for work meetings, but any time I’ve thought of it the timings are confusing, miss one and the next is 30 minutes later, the frequency changes regularly and the fares are all over the shop. Too hard, at least for a workday where appointment times are critical.

The Brisbane City Council has now confirmed that once they start next year the new CityGlider buses will run every 10 minutes, 18 hours a day. It’ll be every 5 minutes in peak times and 24 hours a day over the weekend.

Even I can work this one out.

Travelling from the Ferry stop at West End’s Orleigh Park it’ll run down Montague Road (making that evolving patch feel more connected), through Mollison Street behind Coles, and along South Brisbane’s Melbourne Street.

With tickets issued before you board and extra doors opening to let more people on, the stops will be fast. And we’ll pay one fare (probably $2.50) regardless of how far you travel.

Across Victoria Bridge, through the CBD and Valley, finishing at Teneriffe’s Ferry terminal. Simple, regular, long hours and linking some of our major entertainment, study and work locations. This will be a massive improvement in moving people around the inner city.

Of course the same route and service but under our streets in a Brisbane subway would be even better!

Korean developer Mirae has just bought the block of land on Montague Rd near Koko apartments for $20Million. The block looked like a giant watering hole during our brief wet season last year due to the top layer of soil being removed to remediate the site as it was previously Energex’s gas works. The Courier Mail reports that they plan a mixed use development of commercial, retail and residential.

No truck accessMore of an instruction than a sign of protest. With West End undergoing change more rapidly than ever before this sign on Montague Rd is just one of the traffic calming signals installed in the area to make life for the current residents a bit easier. Trucks making deliveries to any of the new developments along the river have to travel Montague Rd at some point.

We visited the Hale Street Link office today and inspected the visitor information centre.  When complete, the 4 lane structure will connect Milton to South Brisbane.  As Brisbane infrastructure grows rapidly there is much to learn and we think this is a great way for locals to find out what’s going on in their neighborhood.  The visitor centre is open Monday to Friday 8-5pm and is located at 85 Montague Road South Brisbane.

Notice the ever popular “Reverse Garbage” on Montague Road are doing workshops for kids over the school holidays. There’s some very creative people at the centre and it’s one of those places that’s typical of West End – plenty of fresh ideas and people prepared to share with the next generation too.
