One of the challenges of building in Brisbane’s inner-city suburbs is that there’s not a lot of room to spread out. New buildings almost always cover their complete site area so until the ground floor is completed (and earthworks and basements can take months) builders are forced to take over footpaths and sometimes even whole lanes of their adjoining streets.

There’s currently a number of local construction sites with orange-vested people out the front. Slowing us down, directing us around and turning us back. Merivale Street is one of South Brisbane’s busiest roads, as the east-bound off-ramp from the Go Between Bridge. So the workers on “Station 16″ apartments (pictured) have a lot of traffic to contend with and 2 lanes get pushed back to 1. It’s annoying for everyone but impossible to avoid.

A South Brisbane family has bought the commercial building at 22 Merivale Steet from Aria Property International (rumored to be worth about $4million!). The deal, which now sees the local family own the buildings at 22, 26 and 28 Merivale Street means there’s potential for up to 300 apartments to be built on the combined site.

This weekend’s celebration of all things Greek, Paniyiri 2009, has been postponed with the bad weather and will now be held on July 4th and 5th. Musgrave Park is more like muddy park at the moment and wouldn’t mix well with the thousands who attend each year!

A group of local artists are pushing ahead with their art show this weekend. Led by Kangaroo Point painter Christine Donaldson the Home Ideas Centre in Merivale Street will host a diverse mix of talent from 9 artists. We’ve seen some of their work and it’s well worth venturing out – even if you need the brolly to get there!
