So here’s Brisbane city’s skyline today. Can you spot the difference to the view you’d normally see from the cliffs at Kangaroo Point? And, no, it’s not the dreary, cloudy day that makes you think you’re somewhere in Melbourne!

There’s no cranes.

Just out of shot to the left there are cranes on the new academic building at QUT and out of sight in the distance at North Quay there’s cranes working busily on the new Meriton Infinity Apartments. But for the first time in what must be many, many years, this view doesn’t include construction of a big apartment or office building.

Brisbane CBD’s Soleil Apartments are rising quickly on Adelaide Street, with the Meriton team adding another floor at a rate of about 1 every 10 days! Our team had a quick hard hat tour today and there’s no doubt this will be an impressive building when it’s completed.

Meriton have sold a good number of the apartments and it’s encouraging to see their cranes on the city skyline. There’s not many others under construction!

Brisbane City Council are set to approve Meriton Development’s proposal for a residential tower in Herschel Street in Brisbane CBD (pictured below). At a neck-breaking 77 storeys this will be our tallest on completion, eclipsing the current title holder Aurora Tower at 67 storeys, and Meriton’s own Soleil, which will rise to 74.

Meriton’s Harry Triguboff bought his first Brisbane development site just two years ago and Soleil Apartments are now rising out of the ground at that Adelaide Street address. With over 600 apartments his Herschel Street project will add a critical mass of apartments to Brisbane CBD’s western pocket.

You’ll notice we keep using “will” when we write about the project. There’s rarely any “mights” when it comes to Meriton.

News that Australia’s biggest apartment developer has bought his first Brisbane site confirms our city’s now finally ‘grown up’, even for the most cynical of southerners. Having reportedly described us as a “backwater” in years gone by, Meriton’s Harry Triguboff now plans a 70 storey tower for the CBD’s Adelaide Street.

Harry’s privately owned company built 1200 apartments last year, mostly in downtown Sydney and also on the Gold Coast. Sydney-siders know him for his competitive pricing and aggressive council planning submissions, and Harry’s never been afraid to lead the market by offering supply where demand’s not yet proven. With good design we think these Brisbane apartments will sell well, but the man BRW Magazine recently named Australia’s 7th richest wouldn’t be too concerned if they don’t. Triguboff says he’s currently sitting on 3000 unsold apartments (yes, 3 thousand!) and he’s enjoying their strong rental growth.

That’s some nest egg!
