It’s been a South Brisbane landmark for 100 years and the old Croquet Club at 91 Cordelia Street is about to get a little busier! It’ll soon undergo a huge overhaul, creating a fantastic venue for hire by local community groups and organisations for meetings, functions and events.

The Club refurbishment and management is a project of the West End Community House, a fabulous not-for-profit centre that provides a range of services and activities for local residents.

The South Brisbane Croquet Club was formed in 1902 and the pic below gives you some idea what a day out it must have been!

The original clubhouse burned down in 1959 with the current building completed a year later. On Wednesday April 21st Bees Nees hosted a special preview for members of the local property industry to hear more about the project. The night raised over $2700 toward the refurbishment project. We’re looking forward to seeing this piece of local history take on a new role for the community!

a less formal event at the Clubhouse 2010!

cordelia street south brisbaneThe South Brisbane Riverside Neighbourhood Plan released by the Brisbane City Council this week should see the once unloved suburb emerge as a genuine alternative for CBD business. Ahead of the release, Council approved a 10 storey Commercial building to replace 6 Cordelia Street (pictured). Under the new proposal, it could be possible to go as high as 30 storeys for sites of 1800m2 and greater. With Council’s renewed favour for commercial developments in the area, it’ll be interesting to see how residential values improve through a shortage of available stock.

Musgrave Park bounded by Cordelia, Russell and Edmondstone Streets is West End’s home for some of the larger outdoor events. Thousands of people walked, skipped and sang their way to the park for the weekend’s gay and lesbian Pride celebration which kicked off with a rally at the Roma Street Forum, at 10am and wound it’s way over the Victoria Bridge to South Brisbane.

An estimated 10,000 people attended Fair Day, which boasted 25 stands from an array of cultural, community, social and business organisations, including the Queensland Association for Healthy Communities (QAHC), Brisbears, the Queensland Police, Centrelink, Manhunt, Switch 1197 AM and Queensland Pride Magazine.

Carnival rides, a sideshow alley, and of course, drag shows kept everyone entertained. Fair Day was followed by a number of events on Saturday night, including the Official After-Party at the Wickham Hotel and the L-Fling Women’s Dance Party at Uber nightclub, West End.

Here’s one party-goer determined to have a great time!
