It’s worth a quick drive down Grey Street at the moment. With scaffolding starting to come down on two of the iner-city’s biggest construction sites you can get a first look at the mammoth extension to the Convention Centre (pictured today) and, directly across the street, the new Queensland headquarters for the ABC.

The ABC’s 400+ staff will be moving in early in the New Year so local landlords should benefit from that extra demand. We understand parking will be an issue for them so no doubt there’ll be interest in moving nearby. The extra crowds at the Convention Centre will no doubt boost demand for our local hotel rooms and there’s always positive spin-offs for the area when we have more visitors spending money.

Good times indeed for South Bank!

The Convention Centre’s roof in Merivale street turned pink last night to mark the start of a 3 day international conference for breast cancer for survivors. More than 600 cancer survivors have traveled from around the world to attend the 15th UICC Reach to Recovery Conference.

Its official – Brisbane’s next Scrapbook & Papercraft Convention will be held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC), South Brisbane from June 6-8.  The event is held once a year and only in Brisbane.  Keeping with the exhibition theme, Sexpo will launch today at the same venue, with The Australian Sex Party promising a significant announcement to coincide with the first day of the event.  Sexpo opens today at 12noon and will run through to this Sunday.  It’s seems to be a busy time of the year for the BCEC as Bees Nees City Realty is also planning a seminar for landlords – we booked 3 months ahead and only had 2 nights to choose from! More to come on that soon.

Convention CentreWe’ve noticed construction work has commenced on the $130 million expansion works at the Brisbane Convention Centre.  When complete, BCEC will host an extra 250 events a year.  The Convention Centre currently hosts about 900 events annually, but is struggling to cope with demand from national and international clients.

While last week’s cricket international at the Gabba filled the stadium (who doesn’t enjoy watching a drubbing of the Poms?!) Brisbanites have also been lending their support to a couple of local sporting teams. They mightn’t command the same media attention but the Queensland Roar, our Frank Farina coached A-League soccer team, drew a crowd of 32,000 to Saturday’s game at Suncorp Stadium. Despite a solid season they’re now out of the finals running for this year.

No such problems for the Brisbane Bullets who sit at the top of the National Basketball League after an amazing 12 game winning streak. They’ve won 22 of 27 games this season. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen finals basketball in Brissy but with just a couple of regular games left (last local game against the Kiwi Breakers on Feb 3

rd) there’s likely to be some good finals fun to be had at the Convention Centre in a few weeks time.
