You can’t write about the Gabba without at least mentioning the suburb’s most prominent feature, which of course is “The Gabba”. There would be very few Australians who would be unaware that it’s Brisbane’s cricket and AFL stadium (at least among the blokes anyway) so I’ll try to provide some interesting facts and trivia for you to impress your mates with!
The land for The Gabba was set aside for use as a cricket ground in 1895, though it was another 36 years before Australia played a test match there. Probably the most famous moment in The Gabba’s history would be the first ever tied test which was between Australia and the West Indies in the summer of 1960/61. The image of the deciding run-out (pictured) is one of the best known cricketing images of all time.
In Test cricket the average runs per wicket at The Gabba is 31.82, while the average runs per over is 3.1. The biggest individual innings was 226 by Don Bradman in 1931/32 and the highest team innings was 645 by Australia verse England in 1946/47.
I could give the best test bowling figures for an innings and a match but as they are both held by a certain Kiwi all rounder from the mid 80’s it’s actually against Bees Nees company policy to do so!

Like the look of this building? Might be a new apartment tower in downtown Brisbane? At 26 storeys it should house a whole lot of people, right?

According to OverseasPropertyMall.com this is the world’s first Billion Dollar house! Yes, one home for one family.
Of course that family is led by Mukesh Ambani, an Indian Billionaire petroleum refinery owner worth a reported US$29Billion. According to the site : “the first six floors alone will be dedicated to parking for the Ambani family and their guests. The health level incorporates jacuzzi, yoga studio, dance studio, gyms, changing rooms for his and hers, a juice bar, solarium and perhaps even an ice room to cool off in on hot Indian monsoon months.”
So far it’s bigger than most inner Brisbane apartment buildings! But wait there’s more!
“The entertainment level includes a fully sized theatre, where movie buffs can keep entertained in its snack bar, wine room and a space dedicated to entertaining. A ballroom has a show stopping feature; a crystal handelier that takes up about 80% of the ceiling. It further includes a stage, projection screen and a massive hidden kitchen that can cater to hundreds of guests.”
Yeh, but who has that many friends?!!
“The lobby alone has nine elevators designed to serve all kinds of purposes. Two are designated for parking lots, two for the Ambani family, two for service and three for all the guest quarters. On the top floor Ambani is planning to entertain clients and guest with panoramic vistas over Mumbai. All up, there will be 400,000 square feet of entertainment space.”

A garage sale in Highgate Hill?… not this time. Just a lonely piano which might have played it’s last note. Not what you expect to see on the driveway of a Dornoch Terrace home – but there it was this early this morning when I was out for my morning walk. If you tried to play it as you walked by we’d love to hear.

Some guy bought a new fridge for his house. To get rid of his old fridge, he put it in his front yard and hung a sign on it saying: ‘Free to good home. You want it, you take it.’
For three days the fridge sat there without anyone looking twice. He eventually decided that people were too mistrustful of this deal.So he changed the sign to read: ‘Fridge for sale $50.’
The next day someone stole it!

Fridays are for fun!
Father O’Malley was pulled up for speeding. The highway patrol officer smelled alcohol on the priest’s breath and then saw an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car.
“Father, have you been drinking?”, the officer asked. “Only water my son”, replied Fr O’Malley. “The how come I can smell wine?” the policeman enquired.
The priest looked at the bottle and said: “Good Lord! He’s done it again!”

Remember Fridays are for fun! Here’s the best we saw on email this week:
At St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Toronto, they have weekly husbands’ marriage seminars.
At the session last week, the priest asked Giuseppe, who said he was approaching his 50th wedding anniversary, to take a few minutes and share some insight into how he had managed to stay married to the same woman all these years.
Giuseppe replied to the assembled husbands, ‘Wella, I’va tried to treat her nicea, spenda da money on her, but besta of all is, I tooka her to Italy for the 25th anniversary!’
The priest responded, ‘Giuseppe, you are an amazing inspiration to all the husbands here! Please tell us what you are planning for your wife for your 50th anniversary?’
Giuseppe proudly replied, ” I gonna go pick her up.”

So how do you spend your Sundays when your dad works in real estate? Putting up ‘for rent’ signs! Sophie was pretty excited about the ‘leased’ sticker!

Friday’s are for fun… so here’s one of the best we’ve seen on email this week. Got a joke we can share? (It’s tough finding funny and clean material!)
A guy is driving around the back woods of Montana and he sees a sign in front of a broken down shanty-style house: ‘Talking Dog For Sale’. He rings the bell and the owner appears and tells him the dog is in the backyard. The guy goes into the backyard and sees a nice looking Labrador retriever sitting there.
‘You talk?’ he asks. ‘Yep,’ the Lab replies. After the guy recovers from the shock of hearing a dog talk, he says ‘So, what’s your story?’
The Lab looks up and says, ‘Well, I discovered that I could talk when I was pretty young. I wanted to help the government, so I told the CIA. In no time at all they had me jetting from country to country, sitting in rooms with spies and world leaders, because no one figured a dog would be eavesdropping. I was one of their most valuable spies for eight years running. But the jetting around really tired me out, and I knew I wasn’t getting any younger so I decided to settle down. I signed up for a job at the airport to do some undercover security, wandering near suspicious characters and listening in. I uncovered some incredible dealings and was awarded a batch of medals. I got married, had a mess of puppies, and now I’m just retired.’
The guy is amazed. He goes back in and asks the owner what he wants for the dog. ‘Ten dollars,’ the guy says. ‘Ten dollars? This dog is amazing! Why on earth are you selling him so cheap?’ ‘Because he’s a liar. He never did any of that!’

The other day my partner and I together with a few friends visited L’academie for dinner in Spring Hill. Initially our overall attitude was, lets give it try and see how we go. L’academie as the name suggests is a training hub for some of Brisbane’s finest up and coming chefs where they obtain exposure to a real restaurant and not just the classroom.
As soon as we entered the restaurant, which is situated on St Pauls Terrace (cnr with Gipps Street), we were immediately greeted by members of the team and shown to our table which we had pre-booked. Not knowing what to expect we were all impressed with the ambience of the restaurant which boasts fine chandeliers, an array of classic pictures (which would be the envy of many a gallery) as well as soft French music which added to the overall atmosphere. In addition to this the service was exceptional with waiters always being very responsive and courteous.
We measure our attitude to a restaurant with all the above in mind and obviously the main determinant as to whether we would re-visit an establishment is the quality of the food. In that regard I was extremely impressed with all 3 courses and so were the others in the group. The cost is only a fraction of what you would normally expect to pay for a similar experience in a non training restaurant.
To all at L’academie, congratulations and bon appetit.
