The Historic Spring Hill Reservoir to host The Underground Opera Company’s Christmas Carols this weekend.

Just in time for Christmas the heritage listed Spring Hill Reservoir is hosting Christmas Carols. Walking past, you wouldn’t realize that under the modern sheds there is a 150 year old water storage facility, which has been turned into a cultural events amphitheatre and is one of the homes for the Underground Opera Company. Located by the Old Windmill and the iconic Craigston on Wickham Terrace in Spring Hill, the Spring Hill Reservoir was presented as a suitable site for the Underground Opera Company. Through endorsements from the Brisbane City Council, the National Trust and sponsorship from local Spring Hill businesses, this is a one of a kind venue, seating up to only 120 people. It opened in 2014, and this was the first time the public could access this space.

Take a step back and admire the hand laid red brick and mortar craftsmanship, which is credited for it’s amazing acoustics. The Spring Hill Reservoir features beautiful columns and archways to support the walls six meters below Wickham Terrace. This nineteenth century structure provided Brisbane with water fed from the Enoggera Dam from 1871. Spring Hill was considered the ideal location for the main water source in Brisbane until the collapse of the Enoggera Dam in 1962. The Spring Hill Reservoir was then decommissioned as it was unable to provide service for the new high-rise building throughout Brisbane’s CBD.
