News out that the government has sold its huge Main Roads building in Boundary Street for $22m, the buyers a Melbourne-based operator planning to covert it to a hotel.
With an expected 250 apartments this will be the suburb’s largest apartment development by a long way – 2005’s “Oxygen” on Leichhardt St is just 191 apartments. Reports say the group plan to retain half and sell half, creating 350 hotel rooms in the process.
Commercial conversions are not new and with the Brisbane office market nearing record vacancy levels this won’t be the last one we see in the next few years.
It’ll be interesting to see how the job progresses and the impact this will have on after-dark Spring Hill. This is a large chunk of the neighbourhood that will now be buzzing well into the evenings with comings and goings, and that can only be a positive thing.
